PROJECTS - (click on photo for enlarged view)

Currently, we are working on cataloging a student mineral and rock study collection from part of the museum collection. Each sample is entered into the database along with a photograph as well as the properties and classification.

A sample is below:

Amethyst
BG/GM/MIN-SC054
Class: Silicates, SubClass: Tectosilicates, Group: Silica

System: Hexagonal
Hardness: 7
The violet color of amethyst quartz is caused by trace amounts of ferric iron which turns white when heated to 572 degrees F, then yellow (citrine) at 932 degrees F, but becomes violet again if exposed to x-rays or bombarded with alpha particles.
