Before starting, write the number of the unknown mineral down on your sample sheet and fill in all of the properties that you have already collected from your tests, including; hardness, luster, streak, cleavage, color, acid test, and magnetism test, along with any other obvious properties.

To begin, choose whether your unknown sample mineral's hardness is softer than glass with a Moh's hardness less than 5.5 or harder than glass with a Moh's hardness greater than 5.5.
